Clemson Game Could Shape Norvell’s Future at Florida State

On October 30, Florida State was preparing to host Clemson in a game carrying added weight for coach Mike Norvell. The Seminoles entered at 3-4, while Clemson was 4-3. A source described the matchup as a must-win for Norvell as Florida State seeks to change course after consecutive difficult seasons.

Florida State president Richard McCullough recently acknowledged that the team’s results have fallen short of the university’s expectations. He wrote that the school was committed to improving them. Norvell said he appreciated McCullough’s leadership and described his own responsibility as helping the team improve and deliver results.

Norvell has a 41-38 record overall and is 23-28 in ACC games across seven seasons at Florida State. His strongest season was 2023, when the Seminoles went 13-1. They finished 2-10 in 2024 and 5-7 in 2025.

A win over Clemson would give Florida State a needed step toward bowl eligibility and could strengthen the argument for keeping Norvell, at least until a new athletic director evaluates the program. A loss would intensify pressure from fans already frustrated with the team’s record. Florida State also has Miami and Florida ahead; losing to all three rivals for a third straight season would further sharpen questions about Norvell’s future. Any decision may wait for the incoming athletic director to assess the program.
