Starbucks Sees Profit Growth as It Tests AI Drive-Through Tools

Starbucks forecast adjusted earnings per share of $3.15 to $3.25 for the coming year, slightly above the $3.14 analysts had expected. The Seattle-based company also posted a 7.2% rise in sales at established stores worldwide in the fourth quarter, topping forecasts of 5.4%, and adjusted earnings of 80 cents per share, compared with an expected 72 cents.

Chief Executive Brian Niccol said the company’s “Back to Starbucks” effort is shifting from a turnaround toward growth. For the coming year, Starbucks plans to focus on technology and modernization. Starting in 2027, it expects to test AI tools at drive-throughs to help baristas enter orders more accurately and efficiently. It is also exploring digital menus that could recognize participating customers and tailor what they see, alongside easier payment.

Starbucks plans to use AI in the app’s search and discovery features and is considering conversational ordering. It already accepts orders through ChatGPT and has introduced an AI assistant for employees seeking guidance on recipes and service standards. Niccol said the company would test the new ideas and expand those that work.

The company has invested nearly $500 million in labor while also restructuring, closing stores and laying off workers to manage costs. It forecast about $1 billion in share repurchases. Its shares fell about 2% in extended trading. Starbucks also said daily deliveries now reach nearly 90% of its North American stores as it works to improve supply-chain forecasting.
