Medical Examiner Says Atlanta Boy Died From Blunt Force Trauma
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office announced on October 28 that Colby Cooks had suffered fatal injuries from a forceful impact and ruled his death a homicide. The 4-year-old was found dead inside a townhome at the Aviary Park complex in southwest Atlanta after officers responded to a welfare check on Cardinal Drive earlier in the week.
Police took 32-year-old Jasmaine Smoak into custody in Wilkes County in connection with Cooks’ death. The allegations against her include second-degree cruelty toward children and hiding another person’s death. Police said Smoak was a friend of Cooks’ mother and was not related to the boy.
According to authorities, Smoak departed with three children before law enforcement reached the location. One child had visible injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police have not disclosed details about that child’s injuries. Officials anticipated moving Smoak to Fulton County on October 28.
