Vanderbilt tops Wake Forest as Brown makes his mark
Tyler Tanner scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Vanderbilt defeated Wake Forest 74-51 in Nashville on November 5, extending its run of consecutive wins against nonleague opponents to 21. Vanderbilt got 16 points from Ace Glass III and improved to 2-0. Brown and Chandler Bing each scored 13 points, while Kevair Kennedy led Wake Forest with 20.
Brown’s scoring helped Vanderbilt pull away in a game described as close for much of the night. He made five of 10 shots, including four of nine from three-point range, and scored eight points after halftime. Tanner’s driving layup with 3:43 remaining pushed Vanderbilt’s advantage to 65-47.
Coach Mark Byington praised Brown’s confidence and defensive effort, saying the freshman could score quickly and would play an important role for the team. Brown’s performance drew a strong response from the home crowd, and he signed autographs after the game.
The teams had met once before as part of a two-season home-and-away arrangement. Vanderbilt won the opener 98-27 at Wake Forest. Wake Forest is scheduled to host Charleston Southern on November 10, while Vanderbilt will host Memphis that night.
