Doncic Tops NBA in Two-Point Defensive Percentage
Opponents have made just 21.9% of their two-point shots when defended by Luka Doncic this season, the lowest mark among NBA players who have faced at least 30 such attempts. The Los Angeles Lakers shared the statistic in a graphic on November 4, as scrutiny of Doncic’s defense continues alongside his strong start to the season.
After the Lakers beat the Toronto Raptors on Sunday, Doncic said he believes he has improved defensively, while acknowledging he is not the league’s best defender. He added that outside criticism has not shaken his confidence in his progress.
Against Toronto, Doncic scored 45 points, collected 15 rebounds, made five steals and drew three charges in Los Angeles’ 131-125 win. ESPN Research said he was the first player since tracking began in the 2013-14 season to record at least five steals and draw three charges in one game.
Coach JJ Redick praised Doncic’s defensive commitment, including his willingness to draw charges. Lakers center Walker Kessler also pushed back against the idea that Doncic’s defense is overlooked fairly, saying his contributions on that end do not receive enough recognition.
Doncic is averaging a league-leading 38.3 points as the Lakers contend early in the Western Conference. Defensive shooting percentage is only one measure of a player’s impact, and maintaining this level over the season will test whether the latest numbers mark a lasting change.
