Como’s 9-1 win reflects a project years in the making

Como’s 9-1 victory over Lens was a record-setting Champions League night, but it also marked the latest step in a rapid rise built around a long-term plan. After four matches, Como had nine points and sat fourth, behind Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Arsenal. Its results included a 4-1 win over RB Leipzig and a 4-1 victory against Manchester United, alongside a 3-2 defeat by Feyenoord.

Cesc Fabregas has led the team since taking charge in 2023. He joined Como as a player, began coaching at the club and guided it back to Serie A, where it placed 10th in its first campaign back, before earning Champions League qualification. The team’s attacking approach and high pressing have become central to its identity. Como’s backing for Fabregas has helped him pursue that style, even when other clubs showed interest in hiring him.

Midfielder Nico Paz is another example of the club’s ambitions. Como first signed him from Real Madrid in 2024 for about €6 million. In 2026, it made the move permanent for around €60 million, a club record, and gave him a long-term contract. Madrid kept a clause allowing it to sign him again in 2027 for €80 million. Paz chose to remain at Como despite the possibility of returning to Spain. He has scored three goals and supplied five assists in the first four Champions League matches.

The club’s rise followed two bankruptcies, in 2005 and 2016. After the second, it restarted in Serie D. Indonesian conglomerate Djarum Group bought Como in 2019, and the team reached Serie A for the 2024-25 season after 21 years away. It finished fourth in 2025-26 with 71 points, earning its first Champions League place. The club’s next aim is to contend for major honors.
