Warner wins fourth Senate term in Virginia
Warner, first elected to the Senate in 2008, will continue to represent Virginia after defeating Republican challenger Bert Mizusawa. Warner previously won reelection in 2014 and 2020, and served as Virginia’s governor from 2002 to 2006. He said on social media that he was grateful to continue serving as the state’s senator.
Mizusawa, a retired Army major general, had a 41-year military career that included four combat tours and a Silver Star for valor. He also served on Senate staff, as a deputy under secretary of the Army and as a senior adviser at the CIA. His campaign focused in part on reducing Virginians’ tax burden.
Warner has been sharply critical of President Donald Trump’s war in Iran, calling it a war of choice and arguing that the administration lacked a plan to end it. He said the conflict was driving up inflation and energy costs, citing gasoline at $4.50 a gallon and diesel at $6.40. Warner also said he had not heard a plan for withdrawing from the conflict.
Two-thirds of voters considered the war in Iran important when casting their ballots. Warner’s victory gives him a fourth term in the Senate, where he has served since 2009.
Warner’s reelection keeps a critic of Trump’s Iran war in the Senate
Virginia voters returned Mark Warner to the Senate for a fourth term, keeping in office a Democrat who has forcefully challenged President Donald Trump’s war in Iran. Warner defeated Republican Bert Mizusawa in the November 3 election.
Warner has called the conflict a war of choice and said the administration has no plan to extract the United States. He argued the war is driving up inflation and energy costs, citing gasoline at $4.50 a gallon and diesel at $6.40. Two-thirds of voters considered the war important when casting their ballots.
The result gives Warner another term to press those criticisms. He said after his victory that he was honored and grateful to continue representing Virginia. He was first elected to the Senate in 2008, after serving as the state’s governor from 2002 to 2006.
Mizusawa, a retired Army major general whose service included four combat tours, campaigned in part on lowering Virginians’ tax burden. But the outcome leaves the Senate seat with Warner, whose account of the Iran conflict centers on its costs and the absence of a clear way out.
Virginia voters choose Warner over tax-cutting Republican challenger
Mark Warner won another Senate term in Virginia, defeating Republican Bert Mizusawa, whose campaign emphasized reducing the tax burden on Virginians. The November 3 result keeps the seat with the Democrat, first elected in 2008.
Mizusawa brought a long record of military and government service to the race: his 41 years in the Army included four combat tours, and he received the Silver Star for valor. He also served on Senate staff, as a deputy under secretary of the Army and as a senior adviser at the CIA.
Warner has used his Senate platform to attack President Donald Trump’s war in Iran, calling it a war of choice and criticizing the administration’s lack of an exit plan. He has cited rising gasoline and diesel prices and inflation as costs of the conflict. Two-thirds of voters considered the war important when casting their ballots.
The election returns Warner for a fourth term despite that high-profile criticism of Trump’s policy. He previously served as Virginia’s governor from 2002 to 2006 and won Senate reelection in 2014 and 2020. Warner said he was grateful to continue serving the state.
