No. 7 Texas Opens Season With 50-Point Win
Texas shot 62.5% from the field and made 13 of 26 three-pointers in its season opener, a 109-59 win over Chicago State at the Moody Center in Austin on November 2. The Longhorns, ranked No. 7, led by 50 at the finish.
Center Matas Vokietaitis went 9-for-9 from the field and collected six rebounds. Isaiah Johnson added 18 points, while freshman Joe Sterling scored 14, including four three-pointers. Five Texas players reached double figures.
Freshman Marcus Spears Jr. recorded 11 points, grabbed five boards and blocked four shots. Austin Goosby contributed seven rebounds and eight assists, and fellow freshman Bo Ogden also made a three-pointer in his college debut. Texas has 11 new players on its roster and started without guard Mikey Lewis, who had foot surgery in early October. Coach Sean Miller expects Lewis back around mid-to-late December.
The victory opened Miller’s second season at Texas. The Longhorns reached the Sweet 16 last season after entering the NCAA Tournament through the First Four and finishing 10th in the SEC. The team’s defensive progress will face a tougher test in upcoming games.
Texas hosts Gardner-Webb on Thursday, while Chicago State visits Incarnate Word that night. Texas is also set to play Baylor next weekend.
