Saints Fire Run Game Coordinator After Rushing Struggles

The Saints dismissed run game coordinator T.J. Paganetti following their bye week, making their first major coaching-staff change since Kellen Moore became head coach before the 2025 season. The move came as the Saints prepared for a Week 9 matchup with Cleveland.

The Saints are averaging 86 rushing yards per game, ranking 28th in the NFL, and have gained 3.5 yards per carry. Their rushing attack hit a low point in a 16-10 loss to Pittsburgh in Paris on October 25: New Orleans managed 18 yards on 17 carries, its lowest rushing total since an 11-yard game in 1999.

Moore had said after the loss that the team would assess whether staff changes were needed during the bye. Paganetti’s dismissal followed that review. He joined Moore’s New Orleans staff in 2025 after working with him in Philadelphia, where Paganetti held several roles, including assistant offensive line coach and run game specialist. He was part of Eagles teams that won Super Bowl LII and Super Bowl LIX.

Running back Travis Etienne was placed on the injured list October 1 because of a hamstring problem, leaving Alvin Kamara to start in his place. New Orleans is 2-5 and at the bottom of the NFC South. Owner Gayle Benson has called the team’s performance unacceptable and said its play must restore fans’ faith.

The coaching change does not resolve questions about the roster, including the running backs and offensive line. Moore and general manager Mickey Loomis now face decisions about whether the struggles stem from the scheme, player development or roster construction.
