A Rebuilt UCLA Roster Gives Mick Cronin a Chance to Reset

After back-to-back NCAA Tournament second-round exits, Mick Cronin enters the season with a UCLA team built to better match his preferred style: physical, energetic and strong on defense and the boards. The No. 22 Bruins face No. 5 Arizona in Las Vegas on November 2, opening a campaign that could shape perceptions of Cronin’s future with the program.

The biggest addition is 17-year-old Serbian freshman Nikola Kusturica, a 6-foot-9 forward regarded as a potential early contender to become the top pick in the 2028 NBA Draft. Cronin praised his ability to shoot, pass and handle the ball, as well as his reach and defensive presence. Kusturica’s arrival also gives UCLA a likely small forward and another rim protector alongside Xavier Booker.

The Bruins added size and athleticism through newcomers including Auburn transfer Filip Jovic, while freshman Joe Philon III and transfer guard Azavier Robinson are expected to contribute on the boards and in on-ball defense. Texas Tech transfer Jaylen Petty brings a strong shooting reputation. Trent Perry takes on the lead guard role, and returners Booker and Eric Dailey Jr. are among those expected to anchor the team.

Booker showed promise in the NCAA Tournament, averaging 14 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks over two games. He said he played more freely, after UCLA’s run ended with a loss to UConn while forward Tyler Bilodeau was injured.

The Big Ten schedule will test the Bruins against strong competition. A deep March run and a strong conference finish could satisfy fans; another early tournament exit may intensify questions about Cronin’s tenure.
