Canceled Portal Prequel F-Stop Becomes Playable Through Leaks

Files from two separate leaks have been assembled into a playable version of F-Stop, a canceled prequel to Portal. The first batch, a 12-terabyte leak in August, included game assets but not the source code or map data. Those missing components later surfaced in the Valve Cut Content Discord server, enabling the community compilation to take shape.

The result is described as largely stable, but incomplete: playthroughs show missing textures and dialogue. Videos of the campaign run for less than an hour, offering a look at a project that was canceled nearly 20 years ago. There is no indication of an official release from Valve.

F-Stop’s central mechanic differs from the Portal games’ familiar portals. Players use a camera to capture objects in photographs, then alter or move the captured objects elsewhere. Some dialogue and ideas from the project later appeared in Portal 2. F-Stop was developed during Valve’s 2007 Directed Design Experiments, a three-month effort in which the company split into five teams to explore game concepts.
