Moczulski’s Final-Play Kick Lifts Illinois Past Maryland

Illinois secured its third consecutive win with a last-play field goal, overcoming a sluggish start to defeat Maryland 20-17. The Illini improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in Big Ten play, while Maryland fell to 3-5 and 0-5 in the conference, extending its losing streak to six games.

Maryland led 14-7 in the third quarter after DeJuan Williams scored on a 17-yard run. Illinois took its first lead on the opening play of the fourth, when Javari Barnett broke free for a 64-yard touchdown to put the visitors ahead 17-14. Maryland answered with a field goal to tie the score.

Quarterback Katin Houser returned after a hand injury and threw for 223 yards and a touchdown, though his first pass of the game was intercepted. He connected with Brayden Trimble for a 16-yard touchdown late in the first half. Illinois also got a key 25-yard completion on third-and-11 that helped set up a score.

Maryland quarterback Malik Washington and Williams each scored rushing touchdowns, but both also lost possession of the ball. Illinois’ defense stopped Maryland on a first-and-goal opportunity at the 1-yard line and recorded five tackles for loss.

Starting from its own 26 with 5:45 remaining, Illinois drove into scoring range after Maryland had used all its timeouts. Moczulski then made the winning kick. Illinois coach Bret Bielema said his team has had to persevere through difficult stretches. He was also preparing to attend his father’s visitation before returning to the team Monday.

Illinois hosts Nebraska on Friday night. Maryland visits Purdue next Saturday.
