Quincy Edges Goode 88-84 in Two-Stadium Playoff Shootout

The four-hour game began at Goode’s field in Chicago, which has no lights. With 3:42 left and Quincy leading 88-84, officials suspended play because it was too dark to continue. The teams traveled by bus about five miles to Englewood High School, where play resumed at 6:53 p.m. Quincy ran out the clock to secure the win and advance to the second round of the Class 6A playoffs.

The 172 combined points surpassed the previous Illinois high school record of 166, set when Springfield beat Rock Island 94-72 in 2021. The teams also combined for 1,454 yards, an IHSA playoff record. Goode led 60-59 at halftime after the teams scored 84 points in the second quarter alone. Officials shortened halftime to six minutes as daylight dwindled.

Quincy’s Bryson Little passed for 675 yards and recorded nine touchdown passes, adding two more scores on the ground. Goode’s Aedan Cleveland gained 322 rushing yards and crossed the goal line five times. Quincy’s successful extra-point kicks, compared with Goode’s missed conversion attempts, helped preserve the narrow lead.

Quincy coach Rick Little praised his players’ resolve after the game. IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said the unusual circumstances brought those involved together and called the result memorable. Quincy will play the winner of Saturday’s game between Chicago Kennedy and Chicago United.
