Kings Give Doug Christie Time Despite Winless Start

On October 30, Sacramento had lost its first five games, including a 132-120 defeat to New Orleans. Despite growing questions about Doug Christie’s position, the Kings are not preparing to dismiss the first-time head coach immediately. The team wants to evaluate his work with more players available, a source familiar with its thinking said.

Sacramento has several players sidelined. Ben Simmons is out for the season after an Achilles tear, while Keegan Murray is dealing with an ankle injury. Maxime Raynaud and Dylan Cardwell have also been unavailable with knee and calf injuries, respectively. The team places particular importance on player development, including Christie’s growth and that of its younger players.

Rookie Darius Acuff Jr. stood out against New Orleans, scoring 34 points and adding 14 assists and six rebounds. The 19-year-old, selected seventh overall, is averaging 24 points per game, though he has struggled with his shooting efficiency. Nique Clifford and Alex Karaban, two other young players, have had limited playing time.

Christie’s contract is guaranteed only through this season, with a team option for the following year. Continued losses could increase scrutiny, but Sacramento’s next opportunities for its first win come against Memphis on October 31 and Dallas on November 2, as the road trip concludes.
