Canelo Alvarez Faces Christian Mbilli for WBC Title in Saudi Arabia

Published October 30, 2026. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is scheduled to face Christian Mbilli, the WBC titleholder at super middleweight, in Saudi Arabia on October 31, with Alvarez returning to the ring for the first time since September 2025. It is an unusual title-challenger role for Alvarez, who has won 12 major world championships.

Alvarez’s last bout ended in a clear decision loss to Terence Crawford. Crawford later retired, and Mbilli was elevated from interim to full WBC champion. The undefeated Mbilli, whose professional record is 29 wins, no losses and one draw, earned the interim belt with a first-round stoppage of Maciej Sulęcki.

Mbilli is expected to press forward and throw combinations, particularly to the body. But he has shown signs of tiring in later rounds, including in a draw with Lester Martínez. His attacking approach can also leave defensive gaps, areas that could favor Alvarez’s counterpunching and experience over 12 rounds.

The central uncertainty is Alvarez’s condition after a long career and his loss to Crawford. He has not recorded a knockout since 2021, while Mbilli brings considerable power. Both previews favor Alvarez to win by decision, arguing that his skills and ability to counter should blunt Mbilli’s pressure and carry him to the title.
