Sony Brings Back Walkman-Era Headphones With USB-C
Sony has refreshed the headphones associated with the original Walkman, retaining the distinctive lightweight, on-ear design while updating the connection for current devices. The MDR-3R is a successor to the MDR-3 series that debuted in 1979 alongside Sony’s first portable cassette player.
The new headphones keep the adjustable plastic headband and compact ear cushions of the earlier design. They remain wired, but use a USB-C connector rather than a traditional 3.5mm plug. A built-in microphone and a volume control add features absent from the original model.
The standard version comes with blue and orange ear cushions and costs $60. Sony is also selling a Stranger Things edition, marked with the show’s logo on the headband and supplied with black and red cushions, for $80. Both versions are available now.
Sony said the redesign aims to retain the original headphones’ experience of taking music on the go while adapting them for modern use. The simple, lightweight construction differs from larger headphones with broad padded headbands and earcups. The MDR-3R offers a wired alternative rather than wireless connectivity, while its USB-C connection accommodates a modern port.
