Treasury Names 6,576 New Opportunity Zones
The new zones cover areas in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and U.S. territories. The designations open a fresh decade-long period in which qualifying investments may receive preferential tax treatment, with the aim of drawing capital into economically distressed communities.
New Opportunity Zones Extend Tax Benefits for Investors
The new designations extend a program that offers tax advantages to investors who put money into qualifying projects in economically distressed areas. Treasury says more than $110 billion in private investment has flowed through the program since it began, but that figure alone does not show how much lasting benefit reached local residents.
The zones allow investors to defer taxes on capital gains, potentially increase their tax basis for long-term holdings, and avoid capital-gains taxes on investment profits held for at least ten years. The latest law also provides enhanced incentives for eligible rural communities.
The designation covers areas across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and U.S. territories. Treasury says the aim is to attract investment, create jobs, and support growth. The key question is whether the public incentives will produce broad community gains, rather than mainly rewarding those able to invest.
New Opportunity Zones Promise a Decade of Investment
The new designations give investors, entrepreneurs, and local leaders a ten-year horizon to direct private capital toward communities that have struggled to attract investment. Treasury reports that the Opportunity Zone program has drawn private-sector investment exceeding $110 billion since it was established.
The zones span all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and U.S. territories. Qualifying investments receive preferential tax treatment, and the law provides enhanced incentives for eligible rural communities. Treasury says the policy is intended to encourage job creation and long-term economic growth.
The program was established through the 2017 tax legislation and became permanent under the 2025 Working Families Tax Cuts. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the extension gives investors and local leaders more assurance as they direct funds to communities previously passed over. The new designations take effect on January 1, 2027.
